Staying Safe With Your Skip

Skip hire is a very widely used tool, however, not many people think about the possible dangers that they present. There are a few things you should consider before hiring to keep yourself and others safe around your skip. Thankfully, most risks can be minimised by using common sense.

Preparation

Before you book your skip, you should always make sure that you have an appropriate place for it to be kept. Whether that be a public space or your private driveway. Check the measurements for your ideal skip size and compare them to your hire space, will the skip have 3 meters clearance distance once set down? If not you should ask about obtaining a permit to keep it on the road. As well as this, the truck should have easy access to your drive including the ability to reverse in without coming at an angle. Be sure to check that there are no vehicles from neighbours that could potentially obstruct your space.

Filling

Once your skip has safely and efficiently been delivered by our trusted drivers, you will have to think about what items you’re going to put in. There will always be certain items that cannot be accepted, always check with your skip hire company or local council for anything you’re not sure of. Some of these items could include batteries, medical waste, gas cylinders, plasterboard, and asbestos. All of which can cause injury to you and others, we want to keep everybody safe around our skips which is why you should check the restrictions first.

Our main tip for staying safe would be to prepare carefully before booking online and having a skip delivered. Always make sure that you’re not including anything hazardous and sharp. If you want an in-depth look at what items we don’t accept, take a look at our terms of business page. For a short version, including reasons why we don’t allow certain items, check out our waste restrictions page. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any help regarding your skip hire.
